Viterbo is situated in an area rich in thermal springs, famous for their qualities. They can be found especially in the areas of Bullicame, Bagnaccio and Carletti. The main feature of this highly-treasured natural resource is its bicarbonate-calcium components. These thermal waters have many therapeutic applications for the physical wellbeing of the guests, ranging from acquaculture to external balneotherapy treatments, as well as other therapies (vaginal or rectal irrigation).
The high temperature of the waters can be adapted to a variety of treatments and is particularly beneficial for the cardiac and circulatory systems. Thermal sources
Bullicame: It is the best-known spring in Viterbo, it has a temperature of 55 °C - 131 °F and emerges in a pond formed by a deep natural crater. Located in the center of the park of the same name between Strada Tuscanese and Strada Bagni, it feeds three pools frequented by swimmers. To the left of the source a stele shows the verses of Dante's Divine Comedy in which Bullicame is mentioned. Furthermore, in front of the park entrance, it is possible to visit the luxuriant Botanical Garden of the University of Tuscia.
Piscine Carletti: Hyperthermal manifestation consisting of two springs with characteristics similar to those of Bulicame and located at the convergence of Strada Bagni with Strada Tuscanese. It has a temperature of 58 °C - 136.4 °F, and feeds several pools which are the preferred destination for many swimmers.
Bacucco: Located at the northern limit of the thermo-mineral basin along the Strada Martana, these springs, at a temperature of 39 °C - 102.2 °F and no longer visible on the surface, currently have little flow; in remote times, however, they were much more luxuriant, as evidenced by the remains of the majestic Roman thermal buildings in the proximity.
Zitelle: There are two sources, one of which is spontaneous and has a temperature of 56 °C - 132.8 °F, while the other (65 °C - 149 °F) derives from a drilling which was subsequently closed.
Bagnaccio: This area includes several sources, both hyperthermal (65-66 °C - 149-150.8 °F) and hypothermal (23-29 °C - 73.4-84.2 °F), accompanied by significant gas emissions. The five pools host numerous swimmers in every season.
